A
sector (or segment) valve is characterised by its outer casing
in the form of a sector of a cylinder. The result of this feature
is the radial transmission of all hydraulic pressure loads,
making the resultant forces pass along the axis of rotation
of the unit and thus avoiding the creation of a resultant couple.
In concrete terms, the operating force of the valve is highly
independent of the hydraulic pressure applied to its surface.
Because
of this feature, sector valves are used at the bottoms of
heavily-loaded dams. They are water-tight on 4 sides and are
used to close underground channels, being able to take a position
which allows a totally unimpeded flow of water.
The
valve comprises a welded structure, a cylindrical apron and
two arms. It is operated by a hydraulic ram.
